Internet Safety

January 23rd, 2024.

Today in EDCI 336, Jesse Miller joined us to give a presentation on internet and internet safety. For the profession of educators, a lot of liability lies on us for what is publicly out there of us, especially as we will be working with children. A big take away I took from Jesse Miller’s presentation was regards to how much of the information apps have of us, under our permission. I also took away the idea of responsibility of the students, outside of the school.

Have you ever downloaded an app and had to “agree to the terms and use?” Have you ever actually read them? Or do you just press agree? I know I certainly press agree because they are so long to read. But the information within is very valuable and important to know. Below is a copy of Snapchats Terms and Services.

It states that any snapchat, picture, video, or message that is sent to a snapchat friend, is kept by snapchat. These snapchats are also then being monitored, if they are flagged for any reason such as; harm, threatening, violence, etc. they will be addressed by authority and investigated.

My other big take away was the responsibility of students outside of a school scenario. For example, Jesse Miller gave us an example of seeing an underage student at a bar. It is then the educators responsibility to inform staff or security at the bar that they are serving and underage individual at their bar. Although this is outside of the work setting, if you are aware and present of a student doing something illegal, it is your responsibility to adhere to. Or Jesse Miller provided us with another example of seeing a student on a dating app, Grindr. In order for the student to use the app they had to have lied about their age. The educator then in forms maybe the principle of this incident and emphasizes to the principle that Grindr is for the LGBTQIA2S+ community and that the student may not have identified his sexuality to his peers and that this conversation should be a confidential one between the student, educator and principle.

There is so much more I learnt from Jesse Miller and am excited to share my knowledge as well as take it into account for myself.
