What is it?
The Master’s Tournament is an invitational golf tournament that is annually held in Augusta, Georgia. It began in 1934, founded by Bobby Jones and Clifford Roberts, and occurs every first full week of April. This year will be the 88th annual Masters Tournament and will take place from April 11th-14th. Bobby Jones was an amateur golfer who designed golf clubs when he was not golfing, and Clifford Roberts was an investment banker, he contributed to the introduction of a score board, changed course and broadcasting.
The Masters takes place over a span of four days and a total of seventy-two holes. With par being seventy-two, the course reaches 7,510 yards. After the first thirty-six holes are played, those golfers who placed within the top fifty players will advance to the next round.
Who Attends?
It consists of eighty-five to one-hundred golfers, which is classified as one of the smallest field of major championships. But in order to play in the Masters Tournament you must be a member of the Augusta National golf club which costs $40,000 USD dollars yearly.
Along with ever spectator which is roughly forty-thousand patrons. The spectators stand on the side of the course, blocked off by string and follow the golfers through the course.
What do they Win?
There is total purse for winnings. Last year this purse sat at fifteen million dollars. The winnings are split amongst the top ten winners, with the first and second place winners receiving significantly more than the third to tenth place winners. Last year, Scottie Scheffler won the Masters tournament and walked away with 2.7 million dollars. The runner-up Rory McIlroy received 1.62 million dollars and the top ten golfers after them got roughly three-hundred and ninety thousand dollars. On top of the money they win a green blazer that signifies the winning of the Masters tournament.
