The novel, Out of My Mind by Sharon M. Draper follows a story of Melody Brooks, an eleven year old girl with Cerebral Palsy. Cerebral Palsy effects Melody Brooks’ ability to walk or speak but despite this drawback it does not prevent Melody to communicate with the world around her. Her determination and self-drive allows her to overcome the doubts of Cerebral Palsy and communicate with the world. As she faces numerous challenges from those around her, such as her peers and teachers that underestimate her abilities, she uses the support from her family and communication devices to overcome these challenges and prove those wrong.
